The area of agriculture known as horticulture deals with growing plants, including edible fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants, for human consumption. It includes plant breeding, cultivation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling as well as the science, art, and business of cultivating and managing plants. In order to improve plant development and output, horticulture also encompasses the study of plant physiology, plant pathology, soil science, entomology, and plant genetics. Work environments for horticulturists include commercial nurseries, research facilities, governmental organisations, landscaping firms, and residential gardens.
